Interview de William ''Bill'' Dana, pilote d'essai de la NASA

William H. ‘’Bill’’ Dana est certainement est des plus grands pilotes d’essais du 20ème siècle…
Son nom est quasi inconnu du grand public mais il est l’un des plus grands contributeurs du programme spatial américain, notamment la navette spatiale.
Ancien pilote de chasse de l’US Air Force, il quitte celle-ci afin de poursuivre ses études d’ingénieur en aéronautique et aérospatial à l’University of Southern California.
Il rejoint le NACA (qui deviendra la NASA) en tant que pilote d’essais civil en 1958 (Aerospace Research Pilot).
Il est affecté au programme X-15 avec lequel il effectuera 16 vols dont 2 spatiaux.
Il fait ensuite partie du programme Lifting Body et effectuera des vols en HL-10, M2-F1, M2-F3 et X-24B.
Il a été aussi pilote d’essais sur différents appareils à Dryden, notamment le F-100, différentes versions du F-15 et F-16, etc..
Il prend sa retraite en 1998 après 40 ans passés à la NASA.
Etant civil, il n’avait pas eu le droit de recevoir le titre d’astronaute pour ses 2 vols spatiaux en X-15. La NASA l’honorera de ce titre en 2005 (avec Joe Walker et John McKay, à titre posthume).

Q) When have you decided to become pilot and why ?
A) When I was 11 because I watched planes from LAX (Los Angeles Airport) fly over my school grounds.
Q) How did you have choose by NASA to become Test Pilot ?
A) I was a research engineer and asked the chief pilot I could become a test pilot.
Q) What is the most incredible flight experience had you during your pilot career ?
A) No research flight was more exciting than any other.
Q) What is the best airplane have you piloted and why / What is your favourite aircraft ?
A) The best was X-15 because of its thrust.

Q) You are the pilot who piloted the most different Lifting Body, what is your favourite and why ?
A) Yes, I flew 4 (but John Manke flew 4 too)
The M2F3 was my favorite because it was stark looking and a steep glide angle.
Q) How did you feel when you made your 1st glide flight with Lifting Body ?
A) I had one flight in plywood M2F1 and powered HL10.
There were no surprises.
Q) What was your best memory about your test pilot career ?
A) The flight to 300 000 feet
